Gregor Zöllig has been Artistic Director of the Choreography Competition in Hanover since 2020. Born in Switzerland, he has been closely associated with the competition for many years as a jury member and was himself a prizewinner in 1996.
He began his dance training at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen and studied at the Ballet Academy of the John Cranko School in Stuttgart. From 1989 to 1995, he worked as a dancer and soloist at the theatres in Aachen and Münster. From 1997 to 2005, he co-directed the Tanztheater Osnabrück together with Christine Biedermann. From 2005 – 2015 he was artistic director of the Tanztheater Bielefeld. Guest choreographies have taken him to the Tanzwerk Nürnberg, the Staatstheater Schwerin, the Theater Vorpommern, the Staatstheater Nürnberg and the Oldenburgisches Staatstheater.
He founded highly acclaimed educational projects such as ‘Zeitsprung’ at the Bielefeld Theatre and ‘tanzwärts!’ at the Braunschweig State Theatre. Gregor Zöllig has been a member of various juries, including the board of trustees of the Kunststiftung NRW.
Since the 2015/16 season, he has been artistic director and head choreographer of the dance theatre at Staatstheater Braunschweig.
