Tanja Michaela Karin Liedtke
(6 October 1977 – 17 August 2007)
Tanja Liedtke was a German dancer and choreographer working in Australia. She studied in Madrid and Great Britain at the Elmhurst School for Dance and the Ballet Rambert School. In 1997, she moved permanently to Australia, where she was appointed artistic director of the Sydney Dance Company in 2007, succeeding Graeme Murphy – shortly before taking up her post, she was killed in a road accident in Sydney. In 2008, her parents established the Tanja Liedtke Foundation: its purpose is to promote art and culture with a special focus on contemporary dance.
Ruth Schwieger was associated with our choreography competition as a patron for many years – supporting young choreographers at the start of their careers was very close to her heart. After her unexpected death in 2023, her husband Rüdiger Schwieger decided to award a dance prize in her memory, thereby continuing her enthusiasm for young dance.
